Spring cleaning

Spring cleaning is on many peoples’ minds. We are working on getting toxins out of our bodies before summer shorts weather. Workplaces need to clean up the toxins there too. This is a great time to make a plan to do that.

Cliques occur everywhere, from schools to groups to workplaces. Cliques can infer outcasts at work, and can make it difficult for new staff to join in and feel welcomed. This overall issue can stunt a company’s ability to grow. Cliques are toxic.

Very often, there are gossip mills at work. I know that if a boss does not give enough information to employees, the employees will make assumptions and gossip grows from there. Gossip is toxic.

Employees who are not sure what is expected of them will feel under valued and under appreciated. They will go home from work feeling like they are not good at their jobs. Bosses will be wondering why employees are unable to fulfill the job requirements. Everyone will be confused. Unclear expectations are toxic.

It is time to clean up toxic workplaces. Bosses need to make a plan, and spring forward into creating clean and healthy workplaces.

Moms make terrific employees!

One of my favourite groups of applicants here at About Staffing are the moms that want or need to find work. Regardless of their reasons for working, moms seem to have insight that a lot of non-moms just don’t have. Moms understand repercussions of not doing a great job, and know the importance of making an effort. Most moms have good listening skills and a clear set of standards. Moms tend to be more supportive in the workplace, and are less selfish because having and raising kids creates automatic selflessness.

Moms in all kinds of jobs are awesome employees because they have a reason for what they do. Moms are helpful and caring at work because they are naturally that way at home. Mature moms, who have raised their kids and have decided to go back to work after retirement, are one of the most reliable workforce groups.

I would hire a retired mom who wants to work to continue to learn and grow, who wants to feel like she is contributing, and who has lived a life of lessons and support and relationships - any day. Moms have soft skills, and employers are always asking for candidates with provable hard skills and naturally soft skills.

Employers want candidates who are able to get along with others, and who won’t cause grief among the staff. As long as the employee is capable of doing the job, employers want to hire people who will be smart about making decisions, will see into the future, do what is asked, and just get along. Moms fit that profile.

Reasons to use a staffing agency

When the market shifts like it has, the reasons for using a staffing agency change.

When the unemployment rate is low, companies need to use a staffing company like About Staffing or one of our competitors because they can’t find a suitable candidate for a vacant position. Candidates were hard to come by, and the top agencies would get the top people. Candidates would dictate their wage price, their hours, and their type of jobs. And companies would buy!

Now, the market has shifted. Candidates are panicking about finding a job, any job, and they are saying they will take anything to earn a living.

Companies use staffing agencies for hiring temporary help too. They would have a hard time finding their own people, setting up payroll, and all the human resource duties that go along with that for temporary positions.

Finding the right people for the right jobs is what we do in our industry. Agencies are still recruiting like crazy, getting the best people for the jobs, regardless of what the market is doing. And companies are still hiring, for various roles, through their staffing agency of choice.
